Engaging disadvantaged young people in nature and conservation through photography
Wild Shots officially launched its educational outreach programme in November 2015. The project aims to engage young people from disadvantaged communities in wild life and wild places through photography.
Based in Hoedspruit, the programme is aimed at government school children in villages bordering the Greater Kruger Area. The pilot was carried out with the help of Southern Cross School and the support of local wildlife reserve owners.
Wild Shots Educational Outreach has also received support from Wild Shots delegates and speakers, some of whom donated DSLRs for by the project’s students.
The course is very practical in nature and the sessions build from a basic introduction to the cameras and their controls to more advanced area such as Shutter Priority and Aperture Priority. At the end of the course the students go on photographic safaris into wildness areas and put their new photographic skills to the test. The resulting images have been really inspiring and so positive for the children to see their work develop.
The experience for the students has been overwhelmingly positive. By taking young people to photograph in our National Parks and reserves they will be able to better appreciate and value the beauty of the wildlife and wild places. Despite living within a few kilometres of Kruger, many of these young people have never been inside and many have never seen wildlife a first hand, let alone photographed them.
Wild Shots Educational Outreach raises the aspirations of these young people, showing that they can acquire new skills and create beautiful images of the natural world. Exhibitions and publication of their images further enhance the self-esteem and aspirations of our students. Our first public exhibition will be launched on April 22nd, Earth Day, in Hoedspruit.
